Dr. Paula is the Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Shriners Hospitals for Children. He was formerly at Tampa General, during his tenure TGH was awarded HIMSS Level 7 certification Dec 2013, joining only 2.2% of hospitals nationwide in IT infrastructure penetration and use. He grew up in coastal NJ, he is married to a fellow physician, and has 2 children. He is responsible for physician integration and adoption of the enterprise EMR project. Prior to being named CMIO at Shriners Hospitals for Children he practiced Emergency Medicine at Tampa General. While in the ER, Dr. Paula helped establish the Emergency Medicine residency program as well as serving as the Director of Research and Assistant Professor. He secured the first NIH funded study focused on Emergency Medicine, and enabled the program to become a leading research site. His initial experience with EMR was leading the implementation of the Emergency Department EMR system at Tampa General, which went live a full 3 years before the hospital and has now been up and running since 2008. In his spare time Dr Paula has written for CMIO magazine, and contributes regularly to WebMD. Dr. Paula is on the board of governors for Paper Free Florida, working to spread EMR adoption across community physician practices. He grew up in coastal NJ where he went to college and graduated from UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School outside of Philadelphia in 1996, prior to completing his residency in Emergency Medicine at the erstwhile Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He is married to a fellow physician, and has 2 children.
